We Tried It: Uncle Ike’s Pot Shop

Photo IVFor those of you who might not know, tomorrow is the very important holiday known as “Weed Day.” April 20th, or simply 4/20, is celebrated worldwide by marijuana smokers as a day to honor their favorite herb. In many states, including Washington, this day can now be celebrated legally, so we did a little research into one of Seattle’s premier pot shops to have you prepared for the big day.

While the origin of 4/20 and why this day is honored with the title of Weed Day isn’t 100% confirmed, the most widely accepted story is that in California in the late ‘1970s a “420” was the police code for “Marijuana Smoking in Progress,” which was at that time illegal nationwide. After local “heads” (avid weed smokers) heard of the police term, they started using the expression “420” when referring to marijuana overall. Hence, tomorrow’s importance in the wide world of weed.

If you’re not a “head” yourself, you can now still celebrate legally  in states like Colorado and Washington, as well as many others with a medical license. And while I’m from Illinois, on a recent visit to Seattle, I had friends take me on an exploratory trip to Uncle Ike’s, a highly recommended “pot shop” where marijuana and all its accessories could be purchased by anyone over the age of 21.

It was a pretty unique and interesting experience for me! I’m definitely more of a “stay at home with a glass of wine” person than trying some more adventurous fare like weed. And while I’m sure a lot of people don’t consider marijuana, bare with me on this one. I would say I was definitely on the more limited end of the knowledge spectrum in Uncle Ike’s but the staff was helpful and patient with me (much to the embarrassment of my friends).

They have a legit menu of different marijuana plants that is sorted both by price and plant. You can also find out what farm/area of the state the plant was harvested, if you’re into supporting local farmers. They even broke them down by the benefits of the plant. For example,

  • Indicas are best for relieving body pain including headaches and relaxing muscles including spasms
  • Sativas can give feelings of well-being and lead to up-lifting and/or creative thoughts plus it helps fight depression

So, I feel like I’ve done a pretty good job of making this educational and informative as one could be when talking about buying weed. But seriously, if you’re ever in Seattle, I highly recommend giving ole Ike a visit, 4/20 or not.

If you’re a Mary J aficionado, I guarantee they’re still going to have something you’ve never tried. If you don’t know much, they will help you pick something you’re comfortable with and isn’t a huge splurge (thanks guys!). And even if you’re anti-weed, it’s still a cool store with lots of lovely glass items.

Just make sure to mortify your cooler friends by taking a “cool kid” picture in front of their famous branded wall. Hi Mom!
